Of Call of Duty 5, Rabbids, and Starcraft - Image 1Ready for your daily dose of speculations, courtesy of industry insider Surfer Girl?

Today’s string of rumors will be dealing with a mixed bag of topics, ranging from the Starcraft franchise’s origins, to additional info regarding Call of Duty 5 (PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii, DS).

To start off, word on the street is that Blizzard Entertainment’s Starcraft franchise was originally penned to be a Star Wars game. That’s, until Lucas decided to pull the plug on the idea, with Blizz deciding to push through with the project.

As to how past rumors implying that SC was actually a scrapped Warhammer: 40K game fits into this equation, we’re not too sure. For the Wii owners, Surfer Girl’s hinting that work is underway for a third helping of the Raving Rabbids franchise.

The game’s expected to land by Christmas this year, and won’t be focusing on Rayman as much as the past two games did. More hot rabbid action, anyone? Now, if you don’t fancy more of Ubisoft’s dementedly inept bunnies, you might want to hear out the bit regarding development team Nintendo Software Technology or NST.

According to Surfer Girl, the team’s working on a new action game that’s expected to surpass their previously axed ballad of blunt force trauma, Project H.A.M.M.E.R. Smashing. The last rumor deals with Infinity Ward’s upcoming FPS, Call of Duty 5.

According to Surfer Girl’s sources, the game might be a throwback to the historical shooter line that’s been the recurring theme of the CoD franchise (before CoD4 that is). As SG elaborated on why this is the case:

It started production following the completion of Call of Duty 3 which Activision assured Infinity Ward would not be called Call of Duty 3 and would be a spin-off rather than an entry in the main series.

Because they respected the work of Infinity Ward so much. when Call of Duty 4 was still a year from completion and not too many at Activision were confident that this modern warfare thing was going to be successful.

On the plus side, this also means that CoD5 has been in production for roughly two years. That’s plenty of time to polish it up into something that’ll hopefully trump even its highly lauded Modern Warfare predecessor.

That appears to be the latest word on the rumor mill. Drop by again in case we pick up information that might shed more light on these matters.

QJ.NET's On Shelves This Week - Image 1

If last week’s video game releases kept you on that comfortable sofa during the holidays for hours on end, handheld owners are going to get their share of fun that they can keep in their pockets. All gamers have a lot to be happy about this week with explosive titles across all platforms, but both the Sony PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS platforms undoubtedly take the cake.

Final Fantasy VII box shot - Image 1For Final Fantasy fans, the final stretch of March marks the much awaited release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII in North America. On the other hand, popular game creator Tomonobu Itagaki is bringing his own Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword to the west following its March 20 Japanese release. Next-gen consoles will get visceral yet again as cross-platform Dark Sector is about to hit retail, along with the equally brutal Viking: Battle for Asgard.

Aggression - Reign Over Europe. Embark in a new journey to 1900s Europe in this real-time strategy game that grants you to play as Germany, France, Russia or England. In an attempt to be historically accurate without depriving players the freedom of rewriting history, it’s possible to encounter a Nazi-governed England or a democratic Germany in a world where Albert Einstein can be used as a spy.

  • Computer - March 25, 2008
  • Playlogic and Lesta Studio

Australia Zoo Quest. Contrary to what its title may imply, Australia Zoo Quest isn’t an adventure set in the home of Australian animals. Akin to surprise hit Puzzle Quest, it incorporates exploration elements in a puzzle game. When the day is done, you’ll be familiar with Aussie wildlife, and perhaps be able pick up the accent.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Here’s a surefire hit that took Japan by storm at launch as a proper prequel to what many believe to be as the greatest RPG of all time. If you’ve got a PSP and love for the revered franchise, there’s no reason to have second thoughts about buying this on day one.

  • Sony PlayStation Portable - March 25, 2008

Dark Sector. Instead of simply giving us a gun and things to shoot at, D3 decided to arm the protagonist of a third-person action game with an all-purpose glaive which can take out enemies from afar or decapitate in melee range. With that said, Dark Sector holds much promise, and you have a few days to check it out before getting the opportunity to buy a copy.

Emergency Mayhem. You were right on the money when you thought drivers of firetrucks, ambulances, and police cars sometimes think they own the road. Or at least, that would apply in Crisis City where accidents happen left and right. So you as a public servant will have to drive no holds barred to save the city’s citizens in the fastest ways possible.

The latest installment in the long-running light-hearted farm simulation series brings new livestock to the barn, and puts fans in the shoes of their favorite heroines from previous games. Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword. It’s Ryu Hayabusa on the DS with Stylus controls we’ve never seen before and combat that put other action games on the Nintendo handheld to shame. What else can be stated now that it’s been out in Japan since March 20? Unless brain training is your thing, this should be on top of that priority list.

Obscure: The Aftermath. In the spirit of its predecessor, Obscure is in for another spin of scares inspired by teen horror movies. Opoona. It’s mind-boggling how Koei decided to go adorable and and create a “lifestyle RPG” for the waggling Wii, which has character development and exploration elements not present in the company’s breadwinning Dynasty Warriors franchise. Then again, we can’t complain when it’s hand-crafted by former Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy developers. Now, only time will tell if Energy Bonbon-filled title’s charm is enough to win our hearts.

Worldwide Invitational 2008 in ParisAh Paris. The sights, the sounds… the 25 stamina bonus? If you’re going to Blizzard’s 2008 Worldwide Invitational in Paris then you may want to look at Blizzard’s new tourist map.

The map outlines some of the more interesting places in Paris that convention participants can visit in their free time. Well, you can’t expect to be in the convention 24-7.

Each location in the map has been given that old Blizzard charm, just for the heck of it. The Eiffel Tower, for instance, briefly summarizes the history of the monument. Then it tells you that a tour of the place will improve your stamina by 25. An interesting read even if you’re not going to the Worldwide Invitational.
