Challenge of the Warlords - Image 1Infinity Interactive and D3Publisher’s Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords (Xbox 360, PSP, PS3, DS, Wii, Computer, Mobile) has seen considerable success ever since it was first released.

Budding developers out there may be wondering what it takes to create a good multi-platform game such as this. If you find yourself in the same situation, you might want to know that Gamasutra did a postmortem of this title.

The article discusses the failures and accomplishments of the developers while creating the game, as well as the various lessons one can learn from the project. Here’s a short list of some of the things the developers did well as well as stuff that need improvement:

Things learned

  • Time spent polishing is time well-spent. The extra time spent certainly resulted in additional sales. Focus and usability testing makes a difference.
  • Good design is still important: A graphically simple game can still sell quite well.
  • Focus groups are awesome: the title change, the addition of female avatars, and the shifting of the style to something a tiny more anime in execution all turned out to be great changes.
  • Good QA teams are even better than focus groups: although a few bugs slipped through, a solid QA team really helps.

Improvements for next time

  • Work more closely with marketing to maximize how many games are sold in to the stores. This can be done by identifying whether the game has an instant appeal.
  • Work with marketing to deal superior and smarter with the press.
  • Make sure the game is nice and showy to ensure that the press doesn’t have to spend hours trying to find the most appealing parts of the game.
  • Improve the build pipeline to minimize production times and bugs.
  • More respect for what the casual gamer really wants.
  • Some of the standard RPG conventions were totally mystifying to casual gamers, such as matching purple gems to level up.

COD4 DLC in certification, info on 360, PS3, PC Map Packs - Image 1We got the latest news saying that the Map Packs for Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Computer, PS3, Xbox 360) are in the process of certification at Microsoft already.

These will include four new maps, namely Creek, Broadcast, Killhouse, and Chinatown. The details were found at Robert Bowling’s personal blog.

For the DLC, there will be minor fixes regarding the Clan Tags. The update will be re-allowing the use of special characters in the tags but will still prevent the exploit wherein images are used, like the Left Thumbstick and button images.

The 360 build of the game will be getting the Map Packs from Xbox Live during the first week of April. PS3 owners, on the other hand, will also be getting the same on PlayStation Network but on a much later date.

Bowling stated that despite the difference in release dates, the prices of maps for both download service should be the same. As for the Personal computer version, Bowling added that they’re currently working on the logistics to bring the same content in the future.

This is certainly a reason for you guys to jump for joy! Well, keep your eyes glued to this space for more updates and news on the game.

news and details - Image 1

New details have arrived for Fallout 3 straight from Bethesda Game Studio’s executive producer, Todd Howard, who was recently interviewed in an OXM Podcast. Howard gives us some more reasons to look forward to the game. Over 200 reasons in fact.

You guys remember how they said Fallout 3 will have 12 endings? Well, now the figure is closer to 200. Whoa. However, last time they said that variations to the ending are small, so it might still hold. Then again, 200 is still a huge number, even with variations in mind.

Anyway, let’s move on. Here are several new details on Fallout 3 as discussed by Howard during the podcast:

  • The game is twice as huge than when they first started.
  • Your character will have a celebration with a maximum of three, consisting of himself, a humanoid-type companion, and an NPC like Dogmeat.
  • Dogmeat can die, but developers are still working on Dogmeat’s health system.
  • The game is already finished and is now being tested.
  • Main quest takes about 20 hours; a playthrough can take as much as 100 hours.
  • You can interact a lot with the Brotherhood of Steel after a certain point in the game.
  • Release (still) pegged for Fall 2008.
  • Bethesda will be staying true to the visual aesthetics of the game.

Warren Jenson's departure 'unnerving' - Image 1

Let’s not forget that the world of video gaming is still an industry and that companies in an industry are powered by their stockholders. Which is why this latest news may prove to be a precursor for something bigger in Electronic Arts‘ future.

A few days ago, EA’s Chief Financial Officer Warren Jenson left the company, which has UBS analyst Ben Schachter worried. The concern stems mostly from the timing of his departure, considering how EA is still in the middle of an industry drama.

Currently, the industry is pegging EA to proceed onto a hostile takeover of Take Two Interactive. Rumor even has it that they purchased a popular Grand Theft Auto fan forum. Given their recent position, Schachter believes that Warren’s departure will “raise eyebrows”:

We think CEO John Riccitiello is the driving force behind this deal, though the timing here is unnerving and will likely raise questions with investors. […] We think the unexpected timing will raise eyebrows and the co’s risk profile.

He does go on to say, however, that Warren’s departure won’t affect the company in the long-term. For now, this development means tiny for us gamers. However, we might take it as an indication that there’s something brewing over at EA.
