UK newspaper offers cash for anti-games story - Image 1It seems that people in UK have a big thing for violent video games, from laws to studies and now to contests. That’s right kiddies, an event has been posted by a UK newspaper offering money for stories on violent games.

Boys and girls, it’s definitely time to put your thinking caps on. StarNow has just announced that they’re looking for stories and will be paying in cold hard cash… well, in pounds at least.

On their website, they posted: “Write a few lines about how personal games turned you to crime and if it’s something we like, we’ll call you straight back.” Read that line carefully. Personal games. crime. It’s a tiny peculiar but we’re sure, it caught the attention of some of you. Hey, all you have to do is write (and write good) and you’ll be rewarded aptly.

As for the participant, you just have to make sure you’re not over 60 years old. Other than that, you’re eligible to participate in it. Now, if you’re determined to partake in it, feel free to visit the link below. We’ll keep you guys posted for more updates.

MacBook Air and Vista hacked, Linux left standing - Image 1Last week, the CanSecWest conference held a hacking contest that pitted three laptops against hackers. Winners got cash prizes as well as the laptop they hacked.

Each laptop ran on a different OS. The first was the MacBook Air, which of course ran Mac OS X. Next was a Fujitsu laptop running Vista, and the third was a Sony Vaio running on Linux.

By the end of the contest, the Linux laptop was the only one left standing. Not one hacker was able to crack it. Some 400 of the participants found a lot of bugs in the OS, but they ultimately failed to develop an exploit code to hack it.

The first to go was the MacBook Air. In fact, it was hacked in less than two minutes by Charlie Miller. His methods are still unclear, but it’s known that he hacked it using an exploit in the Safari Web browser. He took home US 10,000 in addition to the laptop.

The second (and last) to go was the Vista, which took two days to hack. It was hacked by Shane Macaulay, with help from friends. Macaulay was the winner of last year’s contest. He hacked the code by taking advantage of Java to get around Vista’s security.

Gears of War movie still gunning for 2010 - Image 1

Over the course of last year, we heard a lot of news from the ones planning to make a motion picture adaptation of popular Xbox 360 video game, Gears of War (also for Computer). Since we heard New Line Cinema acquiring the rights for the motion picture, we’ve heard about the preview of the script and a look at the possible director, and this update is all about, well, an update about the movie’s progress.

In an interview with ComingSoon, producer Wyck Godfrey revealed that they’ve a script and a director (that they’re “about to attach”) for the project. Godfrey indicated that they’ll “hopefully make that early next year for the summer of 2010.” So what do we know about Epic Games‘ epic video game’s impending trip to the massive screen? Well, we do know that Stuart Beattie will be penning the script while Temple Hill Entertainment will be producing. We also know that the film makers, the scriptwriter in particular, will be working closely with Cliff Bleszinski (better known around these parts as Cliffy B).

It’s still a long way until 2010, and a lot more info can crop up in the coming months. We’ll get you them updates when they happen so stay tuned for more Gears of War the motion picture news.

multiplayer not coming with Prototype - Image 1

In order to accomplish their goal of producing a good quality, highly successful title by the end of 2008, Radical Entertainment said that multiplayer features will not be available when Prototype (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Personal computer) gets released worldwide. Despite earlier plans to include some enjoyment after the single-player experience, Radical doesn’t want to sacrifice the game’s more valued single-player campaign and squeeze in multiplayer with possible balancing issues.

Tim Bennison, executive producer at Radical Entertainment, wasn’t looking forward to delaying Prototype to 2009 either, as the original plan was to release the action video game within 2008 and with a high level of polish. This notable safe treading on Radical’s part could be attributed to the fact that Prototype is a new IP with no predecessor - let alone a successful one - to lean on, and they were aiming on making Prototype into a successful franchise on its own. He also added: “We ve made the decision that we can t fit it into our original plans delivered with the same level of quality/polish as the rest of the game this time around.”

Though Sierra Entertainment and Radical’s Prototype won’t ship with multiplayer, Radical isn’t completely eliminating that possibility that such features could be added post-release. Bennison says that they are hoping Prototype does well at retail - well enough to spur the developers to create downloadable content adding multiplayer features to the initial release.

And what’s more is that if Prototype wins a massive enough crowd, Radical will cough up a sequel and just maybe have multiplayer planned out from the begin. You can anticipate that to kick off after they’ve carefully reviewed the other facets of incorporating on the internet features, of course. More updates as we get them.

Diablo by Blizzard - Image 1We don’t usually go bonkers each time the notorious rumor monger Surfer Girl posts on her blog, but the latest batch of “insider info” sure raised our eyebrows. If her words hold true, Blizzard’s most explosive year is coming soon and new franchises from other developers are going to surface in the near future.

According to Surfer Girl, Diablo 3 will be announced “barely summer” before the release of StarCraft 2, which is “still on track for release this decade.” The potentially groundbreaking reveal and wildly anticipated release of Blizzard’s big-hitters weren’t tagged with any release windows, so that means anywhere from 2008 to 2010.

On the other hand, the creator of F.E.A.R that we know as TimeGate Studios is said to be working on a possible MMO game titled Spirits and Souls. Day 1 Studios of MechAssault fame also supposedly has “a first-person shooter taking place in the most thrilling of gritty, realistic urban environments” in the works.

Interesting enough, the Dynamic Motion Synthesis pioneer NaturalMotion known for its Euphoria engine is believed to have an original title under development. The mysterious game will define its own genre, akin to Psychonauts and LittleBigPlanet.

Furthermore, Surfer Girl added that the popular comedy film producer Judd Apatow could be making a Leisure Suit Larry film starring Larry himself. While Surfer Girl stated she doubts this tidbit, it’s expected to be a film adaptation of a game that’s actually good.
