Ben Heck, hacker extraordinaire, recently completed his latest (and heaviest?) project yet: the Sony PlayStation 3 laptop. It’ll soon be up for grabs in an auction, but before we see it fall into someone’s hands, we can at least get to see it in action.

This is probably Ben Heck’s last laptop mod project: what’s next after making laptops for all three consoles? Unless of course, he decides to make a laptop that combines all three. We’d actually love to see if he can pull that off. Even though, considering the Playstation 3 laptop alone is 16-pounds heavy, a laptop that combines all three consoles would probably be better off as a desktop personal.

Anyhow, enough dreaming for now. Here’s the video of the Playstation 3 laptop in action:

Ray Maguire - Image 1Ten years from now, the vast majority of gaming software will be bought via online transactions. This was projected by Sony Computer Entertainment UK boss Ray Maguire as he criticized the Tanya Byron report at the current ELSPA press conference.

While games are recorded media and we’ve something on a packet, the recommendations in the Byron Review are okay, comments Maguire. But ten years from now the ratio of games sales will have gone from 90 per cent in-store to 90 per cent online.”

The Sony boss said that this means retailers are currently responsible for the material that come out of their outlets, but once online game sales take over, the areas of responsibility are blurred. Selling games according to age groups will be a bigger challenge.

“This isn t merely a games industry issue,” he adds. “It s an issue for each industry with companies that have a website and when we look at user generated content, it s a people issue.

If Maguire’s projections come to pass, it will render a good part of the Byron report’s suggestions obsolete due to the difference in the nature of on the internet stores and brick-and-mortar retailers. Ratings issued by governing boards could be bypassed if transactions happen in the privacy of households, making it easy for kids to access content inappropriate for them.

For her part, author Dr. Tanya Byron explained that her recommendations did not delve into such a scenario because many key members of the games industry opted not to speak about the future of on the internet game sales with her as the report was being compiled.

Hot Coffee briefly led to an AO rating for GTA San Andreas - Image 1At first glance, the Entertainment Software Rating Board’s (ESRB) “Mature” and the “Adults Only” ratings seem quite similar. After all, both ratings involve people aged 18 and up. What’s the real difference between the two ratings, anyway?

Two words: intensity and volume. According to the ESRB, AO titles “may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and/or graphic sexual content and nudity” (emphasis ours). Compare that with the description for Mature-rated titles that “have content that might be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category might contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language. In other words, Adult Only games are simply too adult.

If you’re a concerned parent or guardian, there’s another point that’s especially important for you to know: out of all the games that have crossed the ESRB’s path, only 23 of them have been given the AO rating.

Dan Hsu of EGM and 1UP has officially resigned - Image 1We’ve seen a number of people leave EGM and 1UP over the years. The latest person who has announced his intention of doing so is Dan Hsu. “Shoe,” as he is affectionately known, has officially announced his resignation. His last day on the job will be April 25, 2008.

Hsu made it clear in his resignation message that he wasn’t laid off or forced out due to any problems with Ziff Davis or anything - the decision to move on was entirely his. His colleague, Sam Kennedy, will take over the responsibilities of Editorial Director upon Hsu’s departure from the company.
So what does Hsu intend to do afterward? According to him, plenty. Of primary importance are lots of rest and sleep, plus immersing himself in various games such as Patapon and possibly World of Warcraft. Nevertheless, Hsu admitted that he adores the video game business too much to stay away from it forever. Nevertheless, by his own admission, he first needs to catch up on some of some much-needed quality time for himself.

Fallout 3 Collector's Edition revealed - Image 1

When we learned that Gamestop had revealed the contents of the Collector’s Edition for Bethesda’s Fallout 3 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360), we were quite surprised to learn that it didn’t come with a Mad Max-styled leather jacket or your very own Garden of Eden Creation Kit. Still, the details behind the Collector’s Edition are quite good, look to be worth the extra US 20 they’re putting up for it.

For starters, the Collector’s Edition comes with your own limited edition Vault Boy Bobblehead, which is perfect for those long days inside the vault. The CE also comes with the official Fallout 3 art book, as well as a Making of Fallout 3 DVD. Best of all, the game, the bobblehead, the art book, and the “Making of” DVD all come in a handsome storage container: the Fallout 3 Lunch Box.

Whether it’s peanut butter sandwiches or anti-radiation medication, it’s the lunch box that really piqued our interest in the CE. Feel free to pre-order one via the source link below, or wait for a copy of the game to come out when it’s good and ready.

Box art for Lego Indiana Jones The Video Game - Image 1By now, you probably already know that Traveller’s Tales and LucasArts‘ Lego Indiana Jones: The Video Game (Computer, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS, PSP) spans the three classic movies.

But did you know that the game grants you to do something that was never seen in the films? That thing is the ability to customize a absolutely new character using parts from the sixty playable characters in the game.

And that’s not all. According to Traveller’s Tales and LucasArts’ fact sheet, Lego Indiana Jones players might also do the following:

  • Use Indy’s whip as a weapon and as a multi-purpose adventuring tool for activating levers, swinging across gaps and what not.
  • Have the Lego Indiana Jones characters swim, climb, carry stuff, shimmy across ledges and interact with the environment in other ways.
  • Use a variety of weapons from the environment to fight enemies (i.e. chairs, bottles, guns, swords, etc.).
  • Play as famous Indiana Jones supporting characters (including villains) such as Short Round, Marcus Brody, Mola Ram and more.
  • Use special, character-specific techniques such as Marion’s monkey access and Marcus Brody’s umbrella slide.
  • Solve puzzles that encourage exploration, creative thinking, teamwork and building.
  • Participate in cooperative gameplay with friends and family.

Traveller’s Tales and LucasArts have scheduled Lego Indiana Jones: The Video Game for release on June 6, 2008.
