Prototype video game delayed, pushed to 2009 - Image 1

Just when we were getting really hyped up for Sierra Entertainment’s Prototype (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC), the studio has announced that the game’s release has been pushed back to next year. Aw dang.

Seeing as how the game looks really great from the gameplay videos we’ve seen though, let’s keep the whining at a minimum. Superior a late great game than an early sucky one. Here’s what Sierra had to say about the delay:

Since its announcement, Prototype has been regarded by many as groundbreaking and taking the open-world genre in new directions, and in the simplest explanation possible, we need more time to deliver the game the team initially set out to create.

Michael Pachter - Image 1Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has predicted that Activision will be exceeding fourth quarter expectations of US 364 million.

He pegged an estimate of the company’s revenue at US 425 million, citing how the March NPD sales show that the company is doing far superior than the expected 12 growth that was initially quoted:

Based upon March quarter NPD data, Activision’s U.S. retail sales are 88 above the prior year quarter while revenue guidance for the quarter is only 12 over last year’s level, implying strong upside.

Pachter also pointed out that Activision’s revenue isn’t expected to grow within the next year, barring the merger with Vivendi. However, he added that the company can still “deliver significant operating leverage” and has advised investors to buy stocks with a US 30 price target.

We’ll be finding out if Pachter’s predictions hold true since Activision will be releasing its Q4 2008 performance this May 8 at the end of market day.

Spiderman-Hulk-Ironman - Image 1A press release from Marvel Entertainment has revealed that their total first quarter sales have dropped to US 112.6 million from last year’s US 151.4 million.

Interestingly enough, this drop didn’t seem to faze the company as it revealed that it is raising fiscal year sales guidance to US 370 million to US 400 million with profits ranging anywhere from US 104 to US 122 million.

Some may be wondering what prompted the company to raise its financial guidance despite the drop of revenue in the first quarter. The answer is simple really, they’re banking on both the Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk franchises to make them money.

The release (and revenue) of the Iron Man motion picture and video games (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, Nintendo DS, Personal computer, PlayStation Portable) did not make it into the first quarter report since the cut-off was March 31, 2008. We’ve been hearing good things about it though, with the motion picture generating US$100.75 million in North America and US 201million globally.

The same press release also revealed the release date of their upcoming video games. The Astonishing Hulk (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, Nintendo DS, Personal computer, PlayStation Portable) is expected to be out by June 3 2008 while Spider-Man: Web of Shadows (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable) should come out by Fall this year.

id Software's Enemy Territory: Quake Wars - Image 1When a new game comes out, gamers usually expect some sort of downloadable content from the developers. However, it seems that the developers from id Software are a bit apprehensive to do this with Enemy Territory: Quake Wars for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Computer.

According to id Software’s business development director Steve Nix, players will have to make do with the 12 maps in the game as the developers have no plans to introduce new ones yet due to the sheer complexities of Mega Texture.

Perhaps the more massive reason the developers aren’t going to be churning out content yet is due to the gameplay balance issues that new maps and weapons would introduce. Nix noted that each weapon, map, and character has been perfectly balanced through years of playtesting. Throwing in something new could upset the balance, and we all know how ugly things can turn out if that happens right?

Does this mean that there will be no new content for the game? No. It just means that id Software is being careful with whatever they decide to release. That stated, we can’t rule out the possibility that id Software might already be testing some new content for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and that they just need to make sure that the new content is perfectly balanced.

unsure about plans for upcoming E3 - Image 1Things are becoming more and more hazy in terms of company attendance in the forthcoming E3. Activision, along with Vivendi, NCsoft, and Her Interactive won’t be attending the yearly event. The same might hold true for id Software.

The company behind Quake Wars (Computer, PS3, Xbox 360) have made it known that they’re unsure of their plans of what they’re going to do with the Electronic Entertainment Expo. This is certainly an surprising turn of event.

There have been confusing reports that the company will be going and at the same time, they won’t be attending it at all. To make things clearer, id Software’s CEO has released a statement. Todd Hollenshead said, “Actually, we haven’t determined in what capacity we’ll be attending E3 (if any), so everyone is wrong.”

Judging from what has been said by Hollenshead, things haven’t been set in stone. There’s still a probability that things might come out better, or worse. In any case, we’ll hook you guys up with the latest developments on this situation.
