Common chems in the Fallout games - Image 1As it turns out, it wasn’t the guns and the violence that caused Fallout 3 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC) to be banned in Australia. Instead, it was the drugs. The heaps and heaps of drugs like Mentats, Jet, Buffout, and even morphine.

If you’ve ever played a Fallout game before, you’ll be pretty familiar with Mentats and the like. These items, more commonly referred to as chems, can buff players up while offering some adverse effects at the same time.

Apparently, the Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC) felt that the in-game representation of these drugs crossed the line. Here’s an excerpt off the OFLC board report:

Corresponding with the list of various “chems” are small visual representation of the drugs, these include syringes, tablets, pill bottles, a crack-type pipe and blister packs. In the Board’s view these realistic visual representations of drugs and their delivery method bring the “science-fiction” drugs in line with “real-world” drugs.

The use of morphine in Fallout 3 also became a point of contention for the ratings board, and, in conjunction with the usage of fictional drugs outlined above, is quite possibly what pushed the game over into banned territory:

In the Board’s view the drug use in particular the use of a prescribed drug, via means of selection from a menu, is related to incentives and rewards as the incentive to take the drug is to progress through the game more easily and the reward is an increase in the character’s abilities and as such is Refused Classification.

It’s weird English, but there it is. Any edits from Bethesda to make the game more palatable for the OFLC look to be impossible too, since the use of these items are an integral part of the gameplay. The game’s set in a radioactive wasteland so if you encounter some irradiated ground it’s only normal that you turn to some Rad-X to avoid turning green, right?

Well, at least there’s still the option of importing.

Activision Vivendi - Image 1Since the day the merger was announced, Vivendi and Activision Games have finally finished all the transactions required to become Activision Blizzard. In a press release that was sent out recently, Activision Blizzard is touted as the “world’s most profitable pure-play online and console game publisher.”

Sounds like a pretty massive claim, but we can see why with Activision Blizzard shares currently at US 27.50. However, it’s not all about the profits. Robert Kotick, President and CEO of Activision Blizzard explained that the merging opens up a lot of possibilities in the gaming industry for the two companies:

By combining leaders in mass-market entertainment and subscription-based on the web games, Activision Blizzard has leading market positions across all categories of the rapidly growing interactive entertainment software industry.

As it stands right now, Vivendi (who owns Blizzard) is now a subsidiary of Activision, and currently owns 295.3 shares of Activision stock. Vivendi will also buy 62.6 million shares in the future, and will end up laying claim on 52 percent of Activision stocks.

What can we expect from the newly-formed Activision Blizzard then? As we have said previously, there are the much-awaited titles such as Diablo 3, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, and even Guitar Hero. But will they also try and merge two of their franchises, perhaps? We’re still waiting for our Guitar Hero meets World of Warcraft

Jade Raymond - Image 1Fans and admirers of Assassin’s Creed (Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3, Personal computer) producer Jade Raymond might be glad to know that she’s going to get busy again real soon. It was recently reported that her new project I am Alive will be shown at E3 2008 and may launch early in 2009.

According to Gamekyo, I’m Alive has been in development for about three years now and will get a lengthy showing at E3. No playable demo has been reported, but the source says that might come when Games Convention 2008 hits Germany later this year.

I am Live is rumored to be an FPS set in a post-catastrophic Chicago. The protagonist, says Gamekyo, will be carrying lots of heavy weapons in a frantic plight for survival. We’ll keep you posted for confirmation on this juicy rumor.
